Inspiring the Next Generation: M5 Robotics Hosts STEM Robotics Workshop

Posted on April 18, 2025 | Columbia, MD

On April 17, 2025, M5 Robotics, Inc. opened its doors to the next generation of innovators by hosting a STEM Robotics Workshop at our development facility in Columbia, Maryland. Held during spring break, this engaging afternoon brought young students face-to-face with cutting-edge robotics—and even gave them the chance to build and take home robots of their own.

The event was designed to inspire curiosity, spark creativity, and provide hands-on experience with real robotics technology. Students toured our facility, where they saw in-progress M5 projects powered by structural components, single-board computers, motor controllers, and custom-designed software—all seamlessly integrated by the M5 Robotics team.

One of the many highlights came from ten-year-old Maryam, who boldly shared, “I want to be an AI Robotics Engineer.” At M5 Robotics, we’re thrilled to ignite passions like Maryam’s, and we’re committed to nurturing that flame with future opportunities.

Another inspirational moment was when a demonstration of one robot-in-progress did not go as planned, nine-year-old Fatma keenly observed that some cables were not connected and that an LED was not lit as expected. Others suggested additional possible causes of the problem. The students’ feedback was appreciated and it was encouraging to see their natural inquisitiveness kick-in for the troubleshooting activities. It turned out that a battery was below operating specifications and the robot was programmed to shut down the motion program if the batteries lacked sufficient power for safe operation of the DC motors. In the next session, we will have the students add programming to display a flashing LED when the low battery shutdown occurs, so we immediately know what’s going on.

During the workshop, participants got to roll up their sleeves and build their own robots. Twelve-year-old Yassin, working with a robot kit, proudly completed his robot and couldn’t stop smiling as he tested his creation. Each student left with not only a functioning robot but also a sense of achievement and excitement for STEM.

Beyond the tech, students also enjoyed exploring our unique cactus garden and shared a delicious lunch from a local Columbia, MD restaurant—making for a well-rounded and memorable day.

This workshop is just the beginning. Future M5 sessions will dive deeper into robotics, featuring advanced build opportunities, programming exercises, and enhancements like sensors and appendages to bring student creations to life.

At M5 Robotics, we believe in the power of hands-on learning to shape tomorrow’s tech leaders. We look forward to hosting more events that continue to fuel the dreams of young innovators.
